The Eisenhower dollar followed the Peace dollar after a lapse of 36 years where a dollar coin was not minted. This coin is named for President Dwight David “Ike” Eisenhower, who died in 1969; his likeness appears on the obverse. The reverse side features a theme honoring the Apollo 11 1969 moon landing that put the first humans on the moon. The design was based on the Apollo 11 insignia featuring an eagle grasping an olive branch in her talons, and moonscape, with the earth in the distance. This coin was annually minted beginning in 1971 and then only eight years making the earliest issues over 40 years old! A special 1976-themed Bicentennial themed coin was minted starting in 1975 and 1976, however none were dated 1975. The reverse for this special issue features a Liberty Bell overlapping a moon. The 1971 – 1976 dated silver dollar coins contain silver. In the years 1977 and 1978 dollars contain no silver, but a 100% copper core, sandwiched with a 75% copper/25% nickel.
